Intentionality: Shaping Your Finances

As we step into 2026, I've been reflecting on what I want this year to be about, and the word that keeps coming back to me is intentionality.

Whether it's deepening relationships, aligning your finances with your values, or simply being more present in everyday moments, intentionality helps us make choices about how we spend our time, energy, and resources on what truly matters.

The Connection Between Intentions, Behavior, and Money

Over years of working with clients as a financial advisor, I’ve observed that your intentions don't just influence your behavior, they shape it. And your behavior, in turn, directly impacts your financial outcomes.

Think about it this way: if your intention is to build a legacy for your children, but your daily behaviors involve impulsive spending and avoiding difficult conversations about money, there's a disconnect. The intention is there, but the behavior doesn't align. When behavior doesn't match intention, your finances reflect that gap.

On the other hand, when you set clear intentions and align your actions accordingly, powerful changes occur. You start making decisions that move you closer to what you truly value, you say no to things that don't serve your goals, and you create space for what matters most.

From Intentions to Action

Don’t confuse intentionality for perfection. It’s about awareness and consistent small choices that add up over time.

Here are a few ways intentionality can show up in your financial life:

  • You're intentional about your spending. You pause before purchases and ask, "Does this align with my values and goals?" Instead of wondering where your money went at the end of the month, you direct it with purpose.
  • You're intentional about your time. You recognize that time is your most valuable resource. You prioritize what matters; like family dinners, time with friends, and pursuing hobbies over the endless pursuit of more.
  • You're intentional about your legacy. You think beyond your own lifetime and consider what you want to pass on—not just financially, but values, wisdom, and connection.
  • You're intentional about your relationships. You invest in the people who matter most, knowing that wealth means little without meaningful relationships to share it with.

What Are Your Three Intentions for 2026?

As we begin this new year, I'd love to invite you to pause and reflect: What are your three intentions for 2026?

Your intentions can be personal, professional, or financial. Choose whatever feels most meaningful to you right now. Maybe it's getting your estate plan updated, or having that conversation with your kids about money, or finally taking that trip you've been putting off!

Whatever your intentions are, I encourage you to write them down and share them with someone who will help you stay accountable.
